RIAI Silver Medal for Conservation 2017-2019
Lawrence and Long Architects were delighted to be awarded second place for the Triennial RIAI Silver Medal for Conservation & Restoration (2017-2019) for their project at 38 Fitzwilliam Place comprising two residences in a Georgian townhouse, during a presentation at the RIAI Institute at 8 Merrion Square on 29th of February 2024.
Jury citation
'The project demonstrates how a house in the Georgian core can be adapted to modern residential use in the hands of a willing client and skilled architects. Homes for two generations were created, feeling more like a natural evolution than a transformation. Every decision was carefully judged. The design retains the integrity of the existing spaces and conserves the features of the original building while sensitively extending at garden level to create the bright and generous lower living unit. The harmonious combination of the original Georgian building, the single storey modern extension and the well-considered garden and deck design allow two separate and special homes which are distinct and complementary'.
